Mosuo

An ethnic community in China who practice walking marriage much like the Nair community in Kerala.

Known to outsiders as the Mosuo, but known to themselves as the 'Na', the Mosuo are a small ethnic group living in the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces of China, close to the border with Tibet. Consisting of a population of approximately 40,000, most of them live in the Yongning region and around Lugu Lake, high in the Himalayas.


1. Walking marriage.
2. Calls themselves 'Na'.
3. Adult sons and daughters live with mothers. Their father lives with his mother.
4. Adult son is head of family, but mother is obeyed.
5. Sons go to wife's house for night stay. And son-in-laws come to their house for night stay.
6. Children stay in the wife's house.
7. "Mosuo homes consist of four rectangular structures arranged in a square, around a central courtyard."
